Transitional Month

Reno, Nevada is known as the City of the Trembling leaves. If you ever visit there, you will know why. For almost 60 years Reno was also known as the divorce capital of the world. Not so much now, as laws have become more liberal in other states. Many famous people traveled to Reno for divorces “back in the day”: there was Clark Gable’s first wife, Arthur Miller, Jack Dempsey, Cornelius Vanderbilt and loads more.

Now, researchers from the University of Nevada, Reno library’s Special Collections Dept. are seeking personal stories from those who traveled to Nevada for “quickie” divorces from roughly 1910 to 1970. You don’t have to be famous to be part of the study!

If you happened to make such a trip to Reno during that time period for a divorce, as I did, please contact Mella Harmon, historian and project co-creator at mellah@unr.edu or 775-682-5640. It sounds like kind of a fun way to be part of history!
